The possibility of Aaron Donald returning to the NFL continues to gain momentum. Sean McVay’s latest update is sure to energize Rams fans. Speaking during training camp at Loyola Marymount University, the Los Angeles head coach addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding the future Hall of Fame defensive tackle. Donald, of course, retired following the 2023 season. McVay cautioned that no formal decision is expected until the team concludes its public training camp. Still, he offered the clearest indication yet that a comeback remains a legitimate possibility.
Asked how discussions have progressed, McVay said that if there is an arrow pointing in any direction, “it’s trending upward.”
Donald has reportedly been following a demanding conditioning program to evaluate whether his body can withstand the rigors of another NFL season. The prospect of pairing the three-time Defensive Player of the Year with newly acquired edge rusher Myles Garrett has fueled much excitement. For now, the organization continues to respect Donald’s timeline. However, McVay’s comments suggest optimism is building behind the scenes.

Donald cemented his legacy as one of the NFL’s most dominant defenders during a remarkable 10-year career with the Rams franchise. Selected 13th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, he immediately won Defensive Rookie of the Year. Donald earned Pro Bowl honors in each of his 10 seasons. He collected eight First-Team All-Pro selections and joined Lawrence Taylor and JJ Watt as the only players to win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award three times. He punctuated his legendary career by helping secure the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI victory and retired in 2024 with 111 career sacks, 543 tackles, and 24 forced fumbles across 154 regular-season games.
