In response to the departure of point guard Nick Boyd, the Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball team secured the commitment of Owen Foxwell, a guard from LSU.

At 6 feet, 2 inches tall, Foxwell has been playing professionally in the NBL, a league that features teams from Australia and New Zealand. Last season, he averaged 11.1 points and 4.5 assists per game, while also demonstrating efficient shooting from the perimeter. Although he plays differently from Boyd, Foxwell is expected to take on much of the ball-handling and playmaking responsibilities that Boyd provided for Wisconsin.

Foxwell is a strong fit for the Badgers' system. Let’s explore what the 22-year-old guard brings to Greg Gard and the team.

Shooting

Foxwell is a good fit in Wisconsin’s evolving offensive system, which prioritizes perimeter shooting and passing. Playing for the South East Melbourne Phoenix in the NBL, Foxwell shot 35% from 3-point range last season and is a 36% career shooter from deep over five seasons. His ability to shoot off the pick-and-roll is especially encouraging, as he can punish defenders who go under screens.

Passing

After watching Nick Boyd score in bunches last season, Badgers fans will see a different archetype of guard in Foxwell. He projects as more of a traditional point guard, someone who can score when needed but is primarily focused on setting up teammates and facilitating the offense. Foxwell showcased that playmaking ability last year with a 4.5-to-1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio. He is especially effective in the pick-and-roll, where he can hit the short roll or find an open shooter. If Wisconsin again builds a roster centered on shooting, a pass-first guard like Foxwell could elevate the group.

Experience

Foxwell, who has played professional basketball in the NBL for five years, brings experience, toughness and a high-level feel for the game to Madison. The NBL features physical, high-level basketball, which should help prepare Foxwell for the demands of the Big Ten.
