Thursday night at the Show at Agua Caliente, I had the pleasure to attend the Coachella Valley Scorpions pickleball exhibition event which included a meet and dink, followed by three fun pro exhibition pickleball matches and even a celebrity match.

Many of my students attended, and the turnout was awesome.

Here are some comments from the participants.

Bonnie: “The drill stations had great variety, great flow, and friendly, helpful coaches.”

Laura: “Great giveaways for prizes!” I can vouch for that, since I left with t-shirts, towels, nutritional supplements, and a signed poster!

Amy: “Great contests at the stations, and everyone was so high energy.”

Lynn and Molly: “Fabulous coaching tips, organized, Agua Caliente staff was awesome.”

Elaine, Kim and Deb: “Great music and intimate venue. We wish we had come to the dink and meet part!"

Tim O’Brien from our local NBC Palm Springs station hosted, and really brought high energy to the event and energized the crowd.

One of the highlights was a celebrity match including Palm Springs police chief Andy Mills, Sumo Dogs owner Jeff Lunak, and Hall of Fame NFL star turned pickler Terrell Owens.

One of the Scorpions players, Marcin Rozpedski stole the show, with great humor, fantastic shots and high energy. I even got his autograph on one of the giveaway posters.

The future for the Scorpions

I had a chance to talk to some of the team owners. Don Zuker, Rob Zwimmer and Kim Jagd all shared great visions for expanding the Scorpions soon. While last year’s squad numbered 14 players in the 50 and over category, this year they added a 40 plus and 60 plus division, with 22 players. Agua Caliente Casinos, Ace Hardware, Sumo Dogs, Eisenhower Healthcare, Joola, Rod Davis and The Pickler are just a few of the major sponsors on board.

A major goal: The team needs a large indoor Pickleball facility to host home competitions. All the Scorpions’ matches are currently played away. This would also benefit our community, providing somewhere cool to play in the summer months, opportunities for clinics, school programs, tournaments and much more. When asked, everyone I interviewed said they would buy a membership.
