Saquon Barkley's impact has never been limited to box scores. The Philadelphia Eagles running back has spent much of his career producing highlight-reel plays, collecting accolades, and serving as one of the NFL's most recognizable stars. Following a historic season in Philadelphia, however, things didn't go as planned in year two. Still, his influence has expanded beyond football circles and into the broader sports landscape.
Recently, TIME magazine recognized Barkley as one of its 100 most influential figures in sports, further cementing his status as one of the premier athletes of his generation. The honor follows a remarkable stretch that not only helped fuel the Eagles' championship aspirations but also reignited conversations about the value of elite running backs in today's NFL.
For years, conventional wisdom suggested the NFL had become a quarterback-driven league where running backs were increasingly interchangeable. Barkley spent much of 2024 challenging that belief, ultimately winning Offensive Player of the Year honors.
TIME places Barkley in its 'Icons' tier and reminds everyone that he is just the ninth player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. Barkley's statistical output dipped during the 2025 season, but as TIME pointed out, each of the previous eight players to eclipse 2,000 yards rushing mark experienced a decline in production the following year.
That reality does little to diminish what Barkley has accomplished as a Super Bowl winner or the influence he continues to wield throughout the sport. What makes his recognition noteworthy is that it extends beyond touchdowns and rushing totals.
Barkley became the face of a broader discussion about positional value, player compensation, and the importance of game-changing talent. He reminded fans, executives, and analysts that elite running backs can still alter the trajectory of championship contenders.
If he returns to peak form and helps lead Philadelphia on another deep postseason run, his influence will only continue to grow. For now, the recognition from TIME serves as another reminder of what Eagles fans already know. Barkley isn't simply one of the NFL's best players. He has become one of the most important figures in sports.
