New Orleans Saints fans got some disappointing news on Sunday as highly-anticipated wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk abruptly walked away from the NFL, retiring at the young age of just 24. It was a big surprise for pretty much everyone, as he had been competing in training camp up until the past few days.
Polk never actually suited up in a game for the black and gold, making the trade that brought him to the Saints end in the worst-case scenario. New Orleans sent a 2027 sixth-round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for Polk and a 2028 seventh-rounder. Now, they essentially move back one year and one round in the draft for nothing after Polk spent the 2025 season recovering from an injury.
That's the bad news. The good news is that it wasn't really much of a loss. The talent level between those two selections is going to be minimal. The trade could actually still be looked at as a positive, because it shows that this New Orleans front office isn't afraid to take a swing if it has the chance of making the team better.
Polk was a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. This is someone who, at one point, was viewed as having WR1 potential. He was an incredible threat in his final collegiate season, when the Washington Huskies made a national championship run, but went on to have a quiet rookie year with 12 catches for 87 yards and two scores. After suffering an injury that cost him all of his sophomore season, the Patriots were ready to give up.
New Orleans saw an opportunity to swoop in and steal a former second-round pick. It was good business that ended up just not working out. This should not at all keep them from making a similar deal in the future, should one pop up.
