Rumor: Sixers tried to acquire Aaron Wiggins at 2026 NBA trade deadline

One of the longest-tenured players, Aaron Wiggins almost saw his time on the Oklahoma City Thunder end four months ago. According to The Philly Voice's deep dive into Daryl Morey's tenure, the Philadelphia 76ers eyed the 27-year-old as a mid-season splash.

The Sixers hoped to leverage the Thunder's interest in Jared McCain to get Wiggins. Instead, they settled on a package of future draft picks to finalize the controversial deal that symbolized the last straw for most of the Philadelphia fanbase.

"There was hope that the talks with the Thunder about McCain could lead to a deal also involving Wiggins — the Sixers would have needed to send out multiple other players in the process — but ultimately the deal ended up centering around McCain," Sixers reporter Adam Aaronson wrote. "With Wiggins staying put in Oklahoma City, where he has recently fallen out of the rotation thanks in part to McCain's arrival."

Interesting to hear the Sixers' interest in Wiggins. As noted above, he's fallen out of OKC's rotation in the second half of the season. The Thunder have seldom used him in their 2026 NBA playoff run so far. If that continues, there's a decent chance he could get a fresh start elsewhere in an offseason move.

Wiggins averaged 9.4 points on 43.1% shooting, 3.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 65 games this past regular season. Those are all drop-offs from his career season last year. He's in his fifth season in OKC after being selected with the No. 55 pick of the 2021 NBA draft.

With two years, $16.6 million left on his current contract, there could be several suitors interested in Wiggins. He's on a team-friendly salary and can provide a scoring boost off the bench for any team. We know for certain there was at least one team interested in him in the Sixers. Or maybe the Thunder keep him around — for those same reasons listed out.
