The Kansas City Royals might not be a postseason contender anymore this season, but that doesn't mean that they can't add help to the Major League roster.
Getting help for the 2027 season and beyond would make sense, and even just getting some extra help for the 2026 season couldn't hurt either. That kind of move is exactly what they've just done a few weeks from the trade deadline.
According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, the Royals are swinging a trade with the Houston Astros to land former Toronto Blue Jays righty reliever Nate Pearson.

"The Astros are trading reliever Nate Pearson to the Kansas City Royals, sources tell The Athletic," Rome reported Wednesday morning.
Kansas City is adding to its bullpen depth, acquiring Pearson in a deal with the Astros. Pearson was recently designated for assignment by the Astros, so the Royals are just jumping the line to bring him in.
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Royals are sending pitching prospect Max Martin to the Astros for Pearson.
Martin is a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher who was a 10th-round pick by the Royals in the 2025 MLB Draft. He has a 2.01 ERA this season in 40.1 innings and a 1.72 ERA in 47 career minor league innings.

He's a 29-year-old right-handed reliever who's spent six seasons in the Majors, with his 16 outings in 2026 with the Astros resulting in a 3.60 ERA.
It's not been a bad season at all for Pearson in Houston, and now, he's coming to Kansas City to join the Royals' bullpen.
In his big league career, Pearson has a 4.99 ERA in 139 games, so his 3.60 ERA this season is a significant step in the right direction.
He previously played with the Blue Jays across four seasons, starting in 2020, where he posted a 5.21 ERA. Pearson also had a stint with the Cubs, posting a 2.73 ERA in 19 outings in 2024, followed up by a rough 9.30 ERA in 11 outings for the Cubs in 2025.
The Royals are sending Max Martin to the Astros for Pearson, getting a Major League reliever in the bullpen, with a little under two weeks to go until the MLB trade deadline.
