Everything appeared to be set up for the Colorado Rockies to open the second half of the 2026 MLB season with a win over the Cincinnati Reds.
Well, that didn't happen as Spencer Steer hit two home runs and Elly De La Cruz went 4-for-5 with a solo home run as the Reds defeated the Rockies 7-2. Friday night's game at Coors Field was the first of a three-game weekend series between these two teams.
Cincinnati starter Brady Singer, who goes to 4-9 on the season, worked seven effective innings, giving up four hits, two earned runs, no walks, striking out six, and surrendering one home run. Reds reliever Tejay Antone came on to work the ninth inning.

Eugenio Suarez hit his 12th homer this season in the sixth inning off Rockies reliever Jimmy Herget. Gabriel Hughes got the start for Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer and worked 5.1 innings. He gave up five hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out six. But Hughes took the loss, falling to 0-1 this season.
The Colorado bullpen didn't come through, and the Reds took advantage of the situation.
Herget worked two-thirds of an inning, giving up two hits, two earned runs, didn't walk a batter, and struck out two. But Herget also gave up two home runs and that didn't help him at all. Victor Vodnik worked an inning and gave up a run, but it was unearned.
Jeff Criswell came on to work in the eighth and ninth innings for the Rockies. He gave up three hits and two earned runs. Criswell walked one and struck out two, but he also gave up two home runs.
The long ball was not a friend at all to Colorado on Friday night.
Cincinnati jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, and Colorado answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie things up at 1-1. The Reds scored three runs in the sixth and single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.
The Rockies added their second run in the seventh inning. That, though, was all the offense that Colorado could muster in front of the hometown fans at Coors Field.
Castro was Colorado's top hitter on Friday night, going 2-for-4 at the plate. The Rockies needed a few more 2-for-4 nights from their lineup to get a win.
These two teams will go at it again on Saturday afternoon at Coors Field. Both Saturday and Sunday games will be played in the afternoon, so make your plans accordingly.
