Riverside Prep’s Meeka Martinez is the Joe Orthodontics High School Athlete of the Week

There were 1,769 votes cast in the race for the Joe Orthodontics High School Athlete of the Week poll.

Riverside Prep softball player Meeka Martinez ended with 71.23% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.

The sophomore received 1,260 votes, beating out two other high school athletes from across the High Desert.

To earn a spot on the ballot, Martinez helped set the table for the two playoff victories for the Silver Knights. She went 2-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base in the 1-0 victory over Del Norte. She then went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and a stolen base in the semifinals against Redwood.

In the voting, Obregon beat her teammate Daisy Hernandez, who received 27.70% at 490 total votes.

The nominees were selected based on performances between June 1-6.

Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.

Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week's games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.

  • How long have you been playing softball and how did you get started? "I’ve been playing softball for 12 years. I got started because my sisters played and I wanted to play also."
  • What do you like most about softball? "Creating friendships and being able to play with those friends."
  • Do you have a pregame ritual? "Just talking to everyone, getting hyped and ready for the game."
  • What’s your most memorable sports moment? "I would say either winning the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship or when I played 10U and we won nationals in Utah.
  • If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be and why? "It would be Jayda Coleman because she went to the University of Oklahoma, and she was an amazing outfielder. She really just stood out and was very passionate about what she did."
  • Someone hands you $1 million, how would you spend it? "I would spend it on softball and give the rest to my family."
  • Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world and why? "Greece. Just looking at pictures, it’s beautiful, and I just want to go see what it is like."
  • If you had an extra hour every day, how would you spend it? "I would definitely either spend it with softball, or resting."
  • Do you have any hobbies? "I don’t have hobbies other than softball."
  • What superpower do you wish you had? "Super speed."
  • Favorite sports team: "University of Texas softball, Los Angeles Dodgers and Dallas Cowboys."
  • Favorite Athlete: "Jayda Coleman."
  • Favorite show: “Henry Danger”
  • Favorite movie: “Trolls”
  • Favorite song: “Superman” by Morgan Wallen
  • Favorite meal: Steak and potatoes
  • Favorite restaurant: Texas Roadhouse
