MANSFIELD — There was a little bit of movement in this week's Richland County Softball Power Poll.
But don't expect that to be the case next week. With this week's No. 1 and No. 2 teams scheduled to meet twice, things could get very interesting moving forward.
While No. 1 remained the same, some of the other top teams are starting to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Let's find out who landed where and why in this week's rankings.
FOLLOW ALONG: Richland County Softball Scoreboard: Cubs, Lex, Rams, Cougars all win
The Tygers dropped both games since the last power poll falling to Ashland 10-0 and West Holmes 22-3. The Tygers have New Philadelphia this week before playing Crestline in a nonconference series next week where they hope to pick up a victory or two.
The Flames hit a bit of a skid since the last power poll suffering losses in all five games. Most recently they lost to Lucas 6-3 in a close one where Bailee Nelson had 15 strikeouts in the circle. If the Flames can cut down on the errors and walks, they have a shot to really make some noise this season.
The Cubs picked up a pair of wins last week beating Crestline 14-1 and Mansfield Christian 6-3. Maddie Boyer has really shined in the circle in those two wins. She allowed just one unearned run on one hit with 10 strikeouts in the win over Crestline and added a solid game against the Flames where she fanned 10 more. She also had four hits and two RBIs against Crestline so she is picking things up at the dish. If she continues this pace, the Cubs have a chance to go on a little run with Game 2 against Mansfield Christian and a home game with Plymouth coming up.
After a 6-4 win over South Central last week, the Big Red lost three in a row, but they were to some very good teams. They lost 14-0 to Norwayne, 11-1 to Colonel Crawford and 16-1 to Monroeville. So take that for what it is worth. Not many teams in Richland County would have a lot of success against those three. The Big Red hosts Monroeville in a series finale before getting Lucas on the road.
The Warriors continued their up-and-down ways last week going 2-2 following each win with a loss. They beat River Valley 8-3 before falling to Clear Fork 4-3, beating Williamstown (WV) 10-0, losing to St. Marys 3-1 and knocking off Wheeling Central 7-4. Morgan Pearson hit two home runs against Wheeling and had three total during the Warriors’ spring trip. Once Ontario figures out a little consistency, the Warriors could be dangerous. They get Galion twice before hosting Clear Fork on Thursday and playing in the Mid-Ohio Spring Classic on Friday and Saturday. It’s about to be a busy week.
The Colts had a great start to the week with a 4-3 win over Ontario before splitting a doubleheader with Fredericktown with a 2-1 victory and a 12-2 loss before dropping a 3-2 decision to Hillsdale. Offensively, the Colts have quite reached last year’s output, but they are still winning close games and keeping teams off the board for the most part. They have a testy 3-game MOAC stretch this week with Pleasant twice and Ontario again in a makeup game before playing in a brutal Mid-Ohio Spring Classic this weekend.
The Whippets had an insane weekend. After sweeping Galion in an MOAC series 10-2 and 13-3, the Whippets beat Northwestern 5-4 and Ashland 4-3 at the MVD Tournament for two very impressive victories over two great teams. They did take a 9-3 loss to Lexington on Monday but Alyssa Booker didn’t pitch as she was being saved for a key two-game series with Highland this week. Maybe we can get a rematch in the tournament.
The Cougars continued their winning ways with three emphatic victories since the last power poll. They beat Western Reserve 10-0, Margaretta 14-1 and South Central 12-1 outscoring opponents by a combined 36-2. The offense is starting to find itself and the combo pitching of Chesnie Patton and Kalee Hamman has the Cougars with one of the best 1-2 punches in Richland County. They have South Central once more before hosting Wynford and Oak Harbor to round out the week. There is a lot to love about the direction the Cougars are going.
After dropping their first game of the year, the Rams are now on an 8-game winning streak and aren’t looking back. Since the last power poll, the Rams beat New Philadelphia 6-3, Clyde 1-0 and 15-6 and Tiffin Columbian 15-5. Caliyah Clapper has boosted her batting average up to .625 for the season and has three home runs to go with it. She also has a 1.49 earned run average and 67 strikeouts. Not too shabby for a freshman. The Rams have a massive week ahead with their Ohio Cardinal Conference series with Lexington before heading to New Philly for a makeup game on Friday.
Lady Lex just keeps on cruising. After losing the second game of the season to New Philadelphia, Lex has won eight straight including three since our last power poll. They beat Colonel Crawford 11-1, Norwayne 18-6 and 10-win Shelby 9-3. With so much being said about Makaree Chapman, rightfully so for a hitter batting .621, the rest of the lineup deserves a lot of credit. Lady Lex has several players who stepped up this season with six different hitters batting better than .300. This week will be big with two games against Madison coming up that will tell the story of the Ohio Cardinal Conference before a doubleheader with Colonel Crawford on Saturday. Lex could create a lot of space in the power poll moving forward.
