Revisiting Nick Bosa’s Beef With Ryan Clark: When 49ers Star Was Called Out for Wearing ‘MAGA Hat’ by Ex-ESPN Analyst
San Francisco 49ers star Nick Bosa isn’t known for his social media, but he totally shocked the NFL world by posting an emoji to approve or celebrate Ryan Clark’s firing from ESPN. That reaction didn’t come overnight as there’s a history behind it.
Inside the Nick Bosa-Ryan Clark Feud That Began Over a MAGA Hat
Bosa’s dislike for Clark seems to stem from criticism Clark directed at him in 2024 after the 49ers defensive end interrupted a postgame interview wearing a “Make America Great Again (MAGA)” hat following San Francisco’s win over the Dallas Cowboys. Bosa declined to explain the gesture, but the NFL fined him for violating its policy on displaying personal messages.
Clark also weighed in on the incident during a segment of “The Pivot Podcast.”
“It seems very clear to me Nick Bosa understands that when you wear that hat, you take a side,” Clark said in 2024. “You take a side of division in a sport that’s supposed to bring us together.
“I’m just waiting for all the people who comment under political and sports things to ‘shut up and dribble’ or to ‘shut up and play football,’ to tell him to shut up and rush. But they ain’t going to say it because they feel the exact same way he do.”

Clark also drew a comparison between Bosa’s situation and that of Colin Kaepernick, who sparked heavy discussion by kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality. Kaepernick’s incident spread throughout the league, drew criticism from Donald Trump, and was followed by his departure from the 49ers. He was never signed by another NFL team and later settled a collusion grievance against the league in 2019.
Based on that comparison, Clark argued that the contrasting public and media reactions to Bosa and Kaepernick reflected a racial double standard in the way athletes’ political expression is treated. After Trump won the 2024 presidential election, Bosa reaffirmed his stance.

“It was well worth it,” Bosa said. “I don’t think my position on speaking about it is going to change, so clearly the nation spoke. We got what we got.”
Bosa did not publicly respond to Clark’s comments at the time. However, following ESPN’s decision to part ways with Clark, he broke a four-year silence on X by quoting a report about Clark’s firing and posting a simple emoji.

It was indeed a great time for Bosa to pull Clark’s leg, but Clark was far from the only big figure affected by ESPN’s latest round of layoffs. The network also parted ways with several other well-known personalities, including Cam Newton, Bart Scott, and Charles Davis.
