STURGIS — In a matchup of two of the stronger teams in Southwest Michigan, the Sturgis girls took care of business on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The Trojans were hosting Kalamazoo Christian and used a determined effort on both ends of the floor to earn a gritty 57-43 win over the visiting Comets.
The win pushes Sturgis out to a 6-1 record on the season. The Trojans have won four games in a row after a buzzer-beating loss to Otsego early last month. Kalamazoo Christian moved to 4-2 following Wednesday's loss.
"I thought we played relentless tonight. It's one of our core values and this team lives up to that really well," Sturgis coach Andy Phillips said. "We got after it, full-court press the entire game. It was nice to see us be able to keep that up for four quarters."
Sturgis knew it would be a tough, four-quarter game with the Comets. And it proved to be, as well. The Trojans did miss some decent looks around the hoop, but still found a way to get things going offensively.

In the end, three players finished in double figures to help lead Sturgis to the win. The free-throw line was a big part of the team's success.
"Overall we persevered tonight. Yeah, we missed some layups but I thought we did a nice job of getting to the line in the second half as well," Phillips said. "That was big for us. They had to foul us to try and get back in the game and we were able to knock down our free throws."
Sturgis finished 9-of-11 from the stripe in the fourth quarter alone. For the game, the Trojans connected on 20-of-28.
Sydney Bir led the way with 14 points in the win, Kinder Smith added 11 and Cora Phillips scored 10. Kenzie Eicher finished with eight, Angela Cary scored seven and Addison Eicher hit for five points while Mya Eicher had two.
Sturgis will be hosting conference rival Vicksburg on Friday night. Phillips said his team is looking forward to getting back on the court against another tough opponent.
"Vicksburg will be totally different for us, they like to slow the game down and they have some length, so that will test us," he said. "The biggest thing for us will be being able to bounce back. We put a lot of effort into tonight, so we need to find a way to bring that same energy to the floor on Friday."
The Colon girls dropped a 57-19 decision to Adrian Lenawee Christian on Wednesday evening. Colon was held to single-digit scoring in each of the four quarters in the game.
"I thought we played a decent first half defensively, we just were never able to get going offensively," Colon coach Beth Preston said. "Lenawee is a big, athletic team and we struggled to keep them off the boards. We ran ragged in the second half and didn’t get near enough shots up. But I thought we played hard and did a better job keeping our composure."
Raegan Thaxton led Colon with seven points and six rebounds while Madi Kulpinski tossed in four points. Lily Preston scored four points with six rebounds, Piper Groff added two points. Both Jaci Borgert and Ruby Bower hit for a free throw.
The Constantine girls played a pair of games this week, beating Delton-Kellogg 35-14 on Tuesday but falling to Kalamazoo Hackett 48-28 on Wednesday. In Wednesday's game, Jaedyn Herlein scored 10 points while Jaelyn Buglione added eight points and Taylor Herlein scored seven. On Tuesday, Jaedyn Herlein scored 13 points while Jaelyn Buglione put in 10.
The Centreville girls beat Decatur on Tuesday, 41-19.
"Our girls played with great energy to start the game tonight, which led to a strong first half," Centreville coach Jill Peterson said. "e emphasize every day giving their best in the things they can control — attitude and effort — for the sake of the team, and they did that well tonight. We slowed down a bit in the second half, but still came away with a solid win."
Lena Reed led the Bulldogs with 11 points, Drew Alexander and Leah Roberts both put in nine points. Mary Stears scored four while Emerson Hackett, Kaylee Griggs, Berkley Shingledecker and Nevaeh Prichard each had two. Hackett grabbed nine rebounds, Alexander finished with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The White Pigeon girls improved to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in league play with a 38-23 win over Marcellus on Tuesday. The Chiefs held Marcellus to two points in each of the first two quarters and led 27-4 at halftime.
Sadie McDaniel led White Pigeon with 16 points and 14 rebounds, Sydney McClure added 14 points while Kadance Smith had four points and seven rebounds. Rachel Byler and Ava Sowards-Haack both scored two points.
