Reigning U.S. Open champion J.J. Spaun and eight-time PGA Tour winner Patrick Cantlay both committed to the Travelers Championship on Wednesday.
Spaun, who’s ranked No. 9 in the Official World Golf Rankings, had a terrific season last year, breaking out for his first major win and earning a spot on the Ryder Cup team. His 64-foot putt on 18 to clinch the U.S. Open title at Oakmont won’t be forgotten by golf fans anytime soon.
The 35-year-old has three career wins on tour, including a victory at the Valero Texas Open last month.
Cantlay, 34, has won eight times on tour and twice finished in the top five at the Travelers. He’s currently ranked No. 33 in the world.
“Two more commitments from great players who have a special connection to the Travelers Championship and have become good friends of mine,” said Travelers Executive Vice President Andy Bessette. “J.J. won the closest to the pin contest at The Umbrella at 15 ½ a few years ago and Travelers donated $10,000 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on his behalf. Patrick made history at the tournament in 2011, shooting a 60 in the second round and making the most of his sponsor exemption. It’s still the lowest score on the PGA Tour by an amateur. Let’s see what they can do this year.”
The Travelers Championship will be held June 25-28.
