FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid is considered one of the biggest games in football, and this weekend we get to see another edition of it. This El Clásico matchup will be the Copa del Rey final between the two sides.

The game will be played at the Estadio Olimpico de Sevilla tomorrow. The match is crucial not only because the game itself is El Clásico, but also because it is a cup final between the two teams again this season.

Ahead of the third game of the season between the two La Liga giants, lots of attention has been given to the referee of the game, Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea, even before kickoff.

This is due to his emotional words at a press conference before the epic encounter between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Spanish official spoke about how difficult his life has been as a referee for crucial matches like the one we are about to witness. Bengoetxea shared how he and his son are affected by the criticism he and other officials receive after mistakes during important matches.

Bengoetxea stated: When a son of yours goes to school and they tell him that his father is a 'thief' and he comes home crying, it's very messed up. What I do is try to educate my son to tell him that his father is honest. It's very messed up, I don't recommend it to anyone. There is no right with what many colleagues are going through, not only in professional football, but also in grassroots football."

"There is no right to what we are going through. It is really f*cked up when my son comes home from school and says his dad is a thief."

Consequences for his words?

While some football fans have felt divided about the words of the referee, rumors from Spain suggest that he may not be the official for the game after his words. According to COPE, Real Madrid were shocked by the image of Bengoetxea crying in the pre-match press conference.

The report suggests that Real Madrid wants him removed from officiating the match tomorrow. This comes after the referee started by discussing how impactful the videos from Real Madrid have made him look terrible.

A video from RMTV shares how the referee has made many mistakes against Real Madrid during matches in the past. They even shared a curious detail that when Bengoetxea is the referee, Real Madrid only won 64% of the matches he has refereed. Compared to FC Barcelona, who have an 81% win rate when the official referees the game.
