There are Detroit Red Wings connections on the rosters of both Sweden and Norway at the IIHF World Championship. Red Wings 2024 first-round draft pick Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is among the Norwegian stars.

Detroit forward Lucas Raymond finished as Sweden’s leading scorer in the tournament. He was joined on the Swedish roster by Detroit teammate Albert Johansson. The second-year NHL defenseman was playing for his country at the World Tourney for the first time.

Here’s something that perhaps you didn’t know about Norway and Sweden: the people of the two countries aren’t all that fond of each other.

Swedes Tell Norwegian Jokes

Swedes like to tell silly Norwegian jokes. When he was playing for the Red Wings, Tomas Holmstrom explained to me why they can’t eat spaghetti in Norway.

Stumped? Well, Holmstrom explained, it’s because they don’t have plates that are long enough.

As we said, the jokes are silly.

In the sporting arena, it’s rare for Norway to get the last laugh against Sweden. That all changed on Thursday in the World Championship quarterfinals. While Sweden was falling 3-1 to Switzerland, Norway blanked Latvia 2-0.

Then the jokes began coming in the opposite direction.

“While Norway is celebrating its first semi-final place in the Hockey World Cup, there is a crisis in neighboring Sweden,” noted Norwegian network TV2. “The team has a proud hockey tradition, and when a semi-final place is lost, there is an uproar.”

The Swedes sought to take their Norwegian comeuppance in stride.

“We toil and struggle out there and do everything we can,” Johansson told Swedish website Expressen. “Then they can call it whatever they want.

“We did our utmost, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough all the way.”

Father of Red Wings Player Overcome by Emotion

Not every Norwegian was looking to make the Swedes the butt of the joke. Some were simply happy to glow in the moment.

“Now I need a defibrillator,” Ricky Nygard, Brandsegg-Nygard’s father, told TV2. “This is so exciting.”
