Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Aaron Ward has never been without his opinion on hockey issues. He’s also not shy about sharing those opinions.
The three-time Stanley Cup winner had his say on the impending hire of Mike Babcock as coach of the Edmonton Oilers, and Ward didn’t pull any punches.
Appearing on the Coming In Hot Podcast, a show that is co-hosted by the former Red Wings defenseman Jason York, Ward put both the Oilers and Babcock on blast.
“If you have half a brain, if you’re in Northern Alberta right now and you’ve got that three-ring circus going on, yeah, you’re just an idiot,” Ward said. “You’re just an idiot, sir.”
Babcock’s reputation for bullying players is well-known today. Though it didn’t come to light while he was coaching Detroit, Red Wings players of that era, notably forward Johan Franzen, have since shared their own Babcock horror stories.
Over the years, Ward, who played with the Red Wings from 1993 through 2001, heard plenty of Bobcock tales from his old Detroit teammates.
“I played with certain guys generationally in that organization that ended up, and we’re not going to name them, but they ended up being in management,” Ward said. “The number of guys that told me that there was basically a take-a-ticket scenario.
“And they were going to hold a raffle on who got to tell Babs he got his walking papers first when he was in Detroit.
“There was a lineup of guys. They hate him.”
Though he never played for Babcock, that didn’t mean Ward was able to escape Babcock’s wrath. His day of reckoning came while working as an NHL analyst for TSN.
“You know how Babs works,” Ward said. “Babs has to be in control of everything.
“When I was at TSN, Babs called the powers that be to try to get me fired.
“I basically had someone in Detroit leak something that was true, and he got pissed off.”
Ward was on the bench, coaching his son’s team in a youth hockey tournament, when he was contacted by TSN management.
“I got a call from someone at TSN,” Ward said. “They said, ‘You’re not going to believe this. Babs is trying to get you fired right now.’
“I go, ‘What?’ So he says, ‘Go look at the clip.’ So there it is. I get mentioned by Babs on local TV for being some nobody. And who’s this guy to release the information? He has no idea what he’s talking about.
“Well, guess what, idiot? It came true the next day. But he tried to get me fired.”
