KANSAS CITY — Instant reactions from the Red Sox’ 7-1 win over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday:
1. The Red Sox improved to 21-27 overall and 13-13 on the road while the Royals dropped to 20-29. Boston is 17-7 when it scores the game’s first run.
2. Starter Ranger Suárez pitched 4 ⅓ innings, allowing one run, four hits and three walks while striking out three. Interim manager Chad Tracy took him out at 81 pitches.
3. Suárez has given up five runs over 40 ⅓ innings (1.12 ERA) in his past seven starts. He has a 2.40 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and .202 opponents’ batting average in nine starts this season.
4. Jarren Duran sprinted in to make a diving catch on Nick Loftin’s 276-foot, 95.8 mph lineout to left field in the second inning. Duran also pedaled back and made a leaping catch on Salvador Perez’s 364-foot, 101.9 mph lineout to left field to end the fifth inning. It came with the potential tying run at third base.
5. Zack Kelly inherited a runner at third base from Suárez with one out in the fifth inning. He escaped, getting Bobby Witt Jr. to fly out to shallow right field before retiring Perez on the lineout to left field. The Red Sox remained ahead 2-1.
6. Duran went 2 for 3 with a three-run home run, double and two walks. His 366-foot home run in the eighth extended the lead to 7-1.
7. Duran led off the fifth inning with a 392-foot double off the center field wall but he got thrown out trying to extend it to a triple. Center fielder Lane Thomas threw a strike to cutoff man Bobby Witt Jr., who threw a strike to third baseman Maikel Garcia.
8. This was the first time since May 7 that the Red Sox have scored more than three runs in a game.
9. Isiah Kiner-Falefa has struggled offensively this season but he reached base three times and had the hardest hit ball of the game with a 108.1 mph single.
10. Caleb Durbin, who entered with a .165 batting average, didn’t start Sunday and Monday. He was back in the lineup Tuesday and put the Red Sox ahead 2-1 with an RBI single in the second inning. Boston scored twice against left-handed opener Bailey Falter, who pitched two innings. Willson Contreras’ RBI single to left field scored the first run.
11. The Red Sox took a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning. Ceddanne Rafaela led off with a double and moved to third base on Wilyer Abreu’s lineout. Rafaela scored on Willson Contreras’ groundout to third base.
12. The Red Sox and Royals will play the final game of their series at 7:40 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Lefty Connelly Early (3-2, 3.21 ERA) is scheduled to start for Boston against right-hander Michael Wacha (4-2, 2.83 ERA) for Kansas City.
