BOSTON — The Red Sox must decide by Thursday whether to select reliever Tommy Kahnle to their roster.

Kahnle’s minor league contract with Boston included an opt-out clause that was triggered Monday, giving the Red Sox 48 hours to decide.

The Sox are “still working through this,” according to a source. They have not made a decision either way.

Other teams have expressed interest in the 36-year-old righty, who has a 1.40 ERA (19 ⅓ innings, three earned runs) in 18 relief outings at Triple-A Worcester. Opponents are batting .203 against him.

“I know he’s throwing the ball well,” Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said before Tuesday’s game. “He was throwing the ball well when I was down there, too. So I’ve said about him before, I know who he is, what he’s capable of, what he’s done, and I know he’s been throwing the ball well. So all I can say is, at this point, we haven’t talked about any changes.”

To add Kahnle, Boston would need to clear spots on both its 40-man and 26-man rosters.

Shortstop Trevor Story or starting pitcher Garrett Crochet could be moved to 60-day injured list to open a 40-man spot. Story, who underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia on May 21, was given an eight-to-12-week recovery timetable.

Crochet (left shoulder inflammation) has already been on the injured list for 38 days, and he experienced a setback last week when he felt lat tightness.

Kahnle has posted a 3.61 ERA in 436 ⅔ big league innings. He recorded a 4.43 ERA in 66 games for Detroit in 2025.

Kahnle was not with the Worcester Red Sox on Tuesday when they began a home series against Buffalo.

“I guess that’s the business part of the game,” acting WooSox manager Iggy Suarez told reporters in Worcester on Tuesday. “I don’t know the decision. I saw him before he left Buffalo (on Sunday). He drove. And he kind of came in, wanted to say bye. And not knowing what’s gonna happen the next couple days — we might see him, we might not. But it’s one of those guys, it’s a pleasure to have him in a clubhouse, man. We’ll definitely miss him if he’s not here."

His changeup has always been his go-to pitch.Opponents batted .157 against it in 2024 and .217 in 2025. But he’s begun to throw his fastball more this season, reducing his changeup usage.

Red Sox catcher Mickey Gasper, who caught Kahnle in Worcester before being called up to the majors in mid-May, said: “His changeup is still fantastic, but he’s able to three-pitch mix it right now. His slider I think plays really well. It’s deceptive from how people scout him looking for that changeup — where it starts. A lot of people shut it down before they can pull the trigger on it. I think his slider’s really playing up and his fastball velo is still there."
