NEW YORK — The Red Sox will have to truly put the “show-and-go” mantra to use Friday night at Citi Field.
Due to extensive delays, Boston’s team charter flight from Chicago to New York didn’t arrive until 4:35 p.m. ET on Friday — just two hours and 40 minutes before first pitch against the Mets. According to FlightAware, the private Delta flight took off from Chicago’s Midway Airport at 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET) to head toward LaGuardia Airport, which is less than three miles from the Mets’ ballpark. Red Sox players and coaches then got to the ballpark around 5 p.m. ET — with their equipment trailing behind them.
As a result, Major League Baseball pushed back the first pitch time 35 minutes. The game will now start at 7:50 p.m.
“Throw it back to the travel ball days where it’s like you drive, show up wherever you’re going and ‘show-and-go,’” said reliever Garrett Whitlock. “Get out there and play and have fun... We know it’s not a normal day, but let’s just have fun.”
Boston’s Thursday matinee against the White Sox ended at 3:43 p.m. CT at Rate Field. The club was then supposed to fly from Midway to Newark at 8:44 p.m. CT, as the custom is for clubs to fly to their next city as soon as the final game in the previous city is finished. Those plans were canceled and the Red Sox were still in Chicago as of 2:30 p.m. ET on Friday.
The flight-related issue is nothing new for the Red Sox, who have suffered a series of travel problems in the last two seasons. Last July, the team’s flight from Boston to Minnesota hit turbulence that was so severe that some players were not available for the next day’s game against the Twins. In late June, mechanical issues in Denver delayed that ride home for hours and players and coaches did not get home until the early morning before a 7:10 p.m. first pitch against the Yankees.
Friday’s series opener features righty Sonny Gray on the mound for the Red Sox against New York’s Nolan McLean. The game will air exclusively on Apple TV as the Sox look to extend their season-high winning streak to seven games.
