The Red Sox plan to give 10th-round draft pick Kaleb LaFavor a signing bonus above his recommended $194,000 slot value.
They will need to pay the tall right-handed high school pitcher more than the recommended amount to keep him from his commitment to the University of Iowa.
Boston selected LaFavor with the 304th overall pick out of Bishop Heelan High in Iowa.
“I guess if we’re trying to dream big here and in a Jacob Misiorowski mold, he fits the bill,” Red Sox director of amateur scouting Jake Bruml said Sunday.
LaFavor has a similar build to Misiorowski, the Brewers’ 24-year-old ace who stands at 6-foot-7, 201 pounds.
LaFavor is listed at 6-foot-7, 195 pounds.
“Going to add more to the frame, crazy release traits,” Bruml said. “And hopefully once he gets into our development system, he’s going to take off when he gets those added velo gains that we’re expecting to come.”
Red Sox draft 11 pitchers, eight position players
Last year, Boston used 15 of its 21 picks on pitchers, including 10 hurlers from the SEC.
This year, Boston drafted 11 pitchers and eight position players. Seven of the 11 pitchers are 6-foot-4 or taller.
Here are all 11 pitchers selected:
- RHP Lucas Davenport, Baylor, 6-6, 230 pounds
- LHP Brett Lanman, Abilene Christian, 6-5, 228 pounds
- LHP Kide Adetuyi, Florida Atlantic, 6-1, 190 pounds
- LHP Josh Volmerding, Cal Poly, 6-4, 210 pounds
- RHP Kaleb LaFavor, Bishop Heelan (Iowa), 6-7, 195 pounds
- RHP Mason Lei, Illinois-Chicago, 6-4, 220 pounds
- RHP Jase Evangelista, Nevada-Las Vegas, 6-2, 200 pounds
- LHP Chase Frey, Grand Canyon, 6-6, 215 pounds
- RHP Alex Kranzler, Vanderbilt, 6-3, 219 pounds
- RHP Luis Calderon, El Shaddai Christian High (Puerto Rico), 6-1, 155 pounds
- LHP Aiden VanDeHatert, Dallas Baptist, 6-4, 206 pounds
“(Kide Adetuyi) is smaller compared to like Brett (Lanman) and Lucas (Davenport), but he has crazy release traits with those seven feet of extension and that crossfire delivery that maybe if he even just gains a tick or two of more velo with how he approaches it, it can play even at those lower velos,” Bruml said.
‘Fun development bet’
Calderon is the smallest of the pitchers, listed at 155 pounds.
“Really intriguing kid that we think can add velo,” Bruml said. “Super fast arm. Just started pitching. I think it was like nine or 10 months ago. He’s formerly an outfielder, so he’s a fun development bet that I know our pitching group is excited to have, especially after getting the chance to interact with him at our workout.”
How many picks with the Red Sox sign?
Bruml is confident Boston will be able to sign at least 18 of the 19 players drafted.
“I think we’ll get 18,” he said. “We’re running into something where it might only turn into 17, but I’m pretty optimistic we’ll get 18 of the 19.”
Breslow ‘wins the gentleman’s bet’
Bruml said the Red Sox weren’t targeting a specific number of pitchers compared to position players.
“Brez (chief baseball officer Craig Breslow) was asking myself and a couple others like how we think the split will go before the draft. I thought it was honestly going to go like 15 pitchers, four position players,” Bruml said. “Obviously we did not get that level. We ended up towards a number that Brez thought was actually going to be how it turned out. I think he threw out that we were going to end up with seven position players and 12 pitchers. So he wins the gentleman’s bet there of being more correct.”
