Rams linked to intriguing QB trade behind Matthew Stafford by landing recent No. 4 pick originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Los Angeles Rams don’t exactly have an ideal situation behind quarterback Matthew Stafford, though we can say that about a lot of teams around the NFL. There's a reason why backups are backups in the NFL, but some teams are better suited than others. At the top of the list of teams that need to figure out the backup quarterback situation, the Rams are among them.
The question for the Rams is if they want to move on from decent draft capital to ensure they have an opportunity to land a decent backup, even if it's one they have to develop.
Thomas Carelli of Sports Illustrated thinks bringing in Anthony Richardson could be a wise decision, but the deal would move on from a 2026 third-round pick and a fourth-round pick in 2027 if Richardson started more than nine games.
“The Rams roster Stetson Bennett as the team's only backup right now. Is Bennett the answer? Surely not. He has dealt with off-field issues and has zero career NFL snaps. McVay will surely add a backup quarterback, and with Richardson, he gets a high-upside quarterback rather than a career backup. There are hardly any reliable free agent quarterbacks available as it is.”
Richardson is the opposite of a safe option. He’s raw, inconsistent, and still figuring things out. However, the physical tools are there, and in the right system, he could be a lot of fun to watch one day.
Sean McVay is also a great coach and typically finds a way to get the most out of his quarterbacks.
Learning under Stafford could also do Richardson a ton of good. We also have to factor in some of his injuries, though, which makes a deal like this a bit tougher to make.
