The quick hits on offense are putting David Stant’s thumbprint on Kahuku football.
Lucky Suguturaga was surgical with almost all his throws, completing a 30-yard touchdown pass to Bodhi Kaanga, and running for a 32-yard TD as No. 3 Kahuku stifled visiting No. 6 Saint Louis 20-12 on Saturday.
The elusive quarterback was also quick-witted with his decisions to tuck and run for first downs. It was classic Stant style that goes back to his state-championship run at Kamehameha in 2009.
Saint Louis kept it interesting in the final minutes. QB Luke Shigeta directed the offense to the Kahuku 8-yard line with 3:03 remaining.
The speedy Shigeta bounced off three defenders and scored on an 8-yard TD run. His PAT pass was picked off, but Saint Louis was within 20-12 with 2:56 to go.
Teawe Crawford recovered the onside kick for Kahuku, which ran out the clock.
Ideal weather at Carleton Weimer Field made it a golden opportunity for Saint Louis and Shigeta to operate. The Crusaders showed flashes of explosive offense, but Kahuku’s defense was in bend-without-breaking mode as the teams opened the nonconference schedule.
Kahuku will play at Waianae, a Division I program, next Saturday in another nonleague battle. Saint Louis will have a bye week before playing at No. 1 Mililani on Aug. 22.
With the scoreboard inoperable, the home team struck gold first. Suguturaga was more than lucky. During Kahuku’s opening drive, he scrambled twice for first downs, and on a third-and-7, bolted out of the pocket and sprinted to the left pylon untouched for a 32-yard touchdown.
On Saint Louis’ second snap from scrimmage, Kahuku forced a fumble in the backfield. Josevata Tulele pounced on the bouncing pigskin at the Saint Louis 16-yard line. Three plays later, the Crusaders came up big.
Toa LePule picked off a pass by Suguturaga intended for Kaanga at the goal line to end the threat.
Kahuku’s Siale Reed returned the favor with an interception of a pass by Shigeta. Reed returned the ball to the Crusaders’ 24-yard line.
On the next play, Blazyn- Brave Nunuha ran right, cut back against the grain and sprinted to the left pylon for a 23-yard TD. Nunuha’s PAT kick opened the lead to 14-0 with 39 seconds left in the first quarter.
Justice La‘a moved to QB for Kahuku in the second quarter. He raced 15 yards for a first down into Saint Louis territory. Alo then rushed 25 yards off left tackle.
On fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line, La’a’s quarterback draw was stopped at the 1-yard line.
The Crusaders’ best drive came up empty late in the first half. On fourth-and-4, a draw play for Tenari
Fuamatu-Ma‘afala was bottled up by a waiting Kahuku defense.
Three snaps later, Suguturaga launched a deep spiral to the back of the end zone. The ball tailed off to the right, but Kaanga contorted his body for a tough over-the-back-shoulder catch just inside the back line for a 29-yard TD. Kahuku led 20-0.
Saint Louis got a gift from the home team in the third quarter. Facemask and personal foul penalties by Kahuku on the same play opened the door. Shigeta’s QB keeper for a 12-yard TD was the Crusaders’ first score of the game, cutting Kahuku’s lead to 20-6 with 5:22 to go in the third quarter.
