WEST LAFAYETTE — As some Purdue football players officially entered their names in the NCAA transfer portal Friday, at least one Boilermaker changed his mind about that option.
Third-year defender Winston Berglund announced in a social media post he would not enter the portal and will remain at Purdue. The Carmel grad announced Dec. 8 he planned to explore his transfer options.
However, the portal did not open until Friday, and the backup linebacker, safety and special teamer apparently had a change of heart. Additionally, player who enter the portal before it closes Jan. 16 can also withdraw and remain with their teams.
Berglund totaled 15 tackles (two for loss) and one sack in his two seasons on the field, both of which were interrupted by injuries. He did not appear in any games in his redshirt season, his first on campus.
In addition to Berglund's change of plans, other Purdue players who had made no prior public declaration of their status announced they would stay. As of noon Friday that list included starting cornerback Hudauri Hines, starting left tackle Joey Tanona and kickoff specialist Seth Turner.
