It will be an Ocean State doubleheader when the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off returns to Mohegan Sun Arena for the 2026-27 men’s basketball season.
Providence and the University of Rhode Island will both take the floor Nov. 7, the first weekend of nonconference action on the schedule.
The Friars will take on Nebraska and the Rams will meet Monmouth in a showcase event just a short drive over the border into Connecticut. Game times have yet to be released, and tickets will go on sale Sept. 11.
“This will be our third time playing at Mohegan Sun in my five seasons at Rhode Island,” URI coach Archie Miller said. “It is a quality environment for the team and the fans.”
“Having coached in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off last season, I was impressed with the arena and the first-class event that the Hall of Fame put together,” Providence coach Bryan Hodgson said. “I know Friar fans enjoy going to Mohegan Sun and I am sure they will be looking forward to this matchup.”
Providence figures to face an immediate test against the Cornhuskers, who reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament last season after a 20-0 start. Fred Hoiberg has guided Nebraska to March Madness in two of his last three seasons after four appearances with Iowa State from 2011-15. The Friars are hoping for a return to meaningful postseason play after missing the last three editions of the event.
Hodgson and his South Florida team suffered a 99-95 loss to George Washington in this event last season. The Bulls allowed 67.7% shooting from 2-point range and 30 made free throws while finishing just 6-for-33 from deep. South Florida endured an uneven 8-6 start before catching fire in American Athletic Conference play, closing 25-9 overall and reaching the NCAA Tournament.
URI will meet the Hawks after their appearance in the Coastal Athletic Association tournament title game in the spring. Monmouth was seeking a first NCAA Tournament appearance under King Rice, a former assistant at Providence who has been with the program since the 2011-12 season. Rice has put together three 20-win seasons with the Hawks, including a combined 55-15 run from 2015-17.
The Friars add this event to a nonconference schedule headlined by a Thanksgiving trip to the Maui Invitational. Providence will play three games in Hawaii against a field that also is scheduled to include Arizona, BYU, Clemson, Colorado State, Mississippi, Virginia Commonwealth and Washington. The Wildcats reached the Final Four last season, falling to eventual national champion Michigan in the semifinals.
The Rams have in-state dates booked with the Friars and Brown but have yet to announce the majority of their nonconference matchups for 2026-27. URI played Tulsa on a neutral floor and three more games at the ESPN Events Invitational last season. The Rams lost to the Golden Hurricane and in their Orlando opener against Towson before beating Vermont and former Atlantic 10 rival Temple.
This venue hasn’t been kind to Providence in recent seasons. The Friars split two games at Mohegan Sun last year, losing in overtime against Virginia Tech and beating Penn State. Providence fell to St. Bonaventure in 2024-25 and lost a pair of games to Miami and Saint Louis in 2022-23, the last season in charge for Ed Cooley before Kim English was hired as his replacement.
URI will also be in search of its first success at Mohegan Sun since taking part in the Bubbleville promotional event at the start of the 2020-21 season. The Rams played four games on the casino grounds as part of a quarantined group of teams who were isolated due to COVID-19 restrictions. URI lost Arizona State and Boston College, beat South Florida and San Francisco and fell twice in a 2023-24 return to Northwestern and Washington State.
