Jul. 25—Aside from area Male Athlete of the Year Dane Eisenmenger, Sports Editor Matt Daniels highlights 10 other area male athletes who stood out during the 2025-26 school year:
The senior right-handed pitcher for the Spartans baffled opposing hitters all spring, going 11-0 with a 1.12 earned run average for the Class 2A state champions. He was also a solid hitter on a 40-win baseball team, and his contributions on the diamond came after he filled key roles on the SJ-O boys' basketball team in the winter and the SJ-O boys' golf team last fall.
A lockdown cornerback in football for a Class 3A state runner-up team who could also catch a pass at wide receiver if needed. A point guard who ran the Rockets' offense in basketball to a third-place finish in Class 2A. And a versatile athlete on the baseball field who could play multiple positions for a 26-win team. What couldn't Henry do? Not much.
He hardly ever left the football field for the Rockets, catching a team-high 79 passes for 1,305 yards and 14 touchdowns while also starting in the secondary for a 12-win team that reached the Class 3A state title game. In basketball, his outside shooting helped Unity advance to the Class 2A state tournament. And he was the Rockets' top pitcher in baseball. Impressive.
If the Rockets needed a big play — whether it was in football, basketball or baseball — Hoggard could likely provide it. A dynamic athlete, the Parkland baseball signee caught 68 passes for 1,322 yards and a team-high 18 touchdowns during football season, started on a Final Four basketball team and manned center field for the Rockets' baseball team.
He disrupted opposing quarterbacks last fall with a team-high 12 sacks and finished with 21 tackles for loss for the Rockets, helping Unity football make the Class 3A state title game in Normal. Langendorf then averaged a team-high 11.7 points and team-high 7.3 rebounds for the successful Unity boys' basketball team and was the Rockets' starting first baseman in baseball.
Bohm emerged on the basketball court this winter, leading a 19-win Bulldogs team by doing it all. The Illinois Wesleyan recruit averaged 25.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals despite opponents actively trying to stop him each time Bohm stopped on the court. Along with his basketball prowess, Bohm advanced to the Class 2A boys' golf state tournament.
Winona State is likely getting a steal. The Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin standout can go get a bucket. And another. And another. The Blue Devils don't go 23-8 without the effort and talent Peoples put on display every game he played this past winter. All told, the guard averaged 31.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.3 steals during a ridiculous senior season.
Hogan kept chipping away at his specialty — the pole vault — until no one could top what he achieved during his final track and field season with the Sabers. A four-time state qualifier, Hogan finally earned a Class 1A state title when he cleared 15 feet, 7 inches, almost more than a foot-and-a-half better than the state runner-up. He also contributed in soccer for STM.
Nearly every time Madigan stepped on a tennis court this spring, he didn't lose. The only time the STM standout did suffer a setback was in the Class 1A state semifinals. The News-Gazette's All-Area Player of the Year compiled a 27-1 record in singles and an equally impressive 17-0 record in doubles play. It all added up to a third-place finish in state to cap a superb career.
The future Indiana State distance runner made his last cross-country race with the Bulldogs count. McMurry placed 16th at the Class 2A state meet last November, helping M-S achieve a second-place team state trophy at Detweiller Park in Peoria. McMurry also shined on the track in the spring, playing a key part in the Bulldogs' 1,600-meter relay finishing third in state.
