Portugal vs DR Congo – Predicted lineup and team news

Portugal will kick off their FIFA World Cup 2026 journey against DR Congo on Wednesday, marking a special occasion as DR Congo returns to the tournament after a 52-year absence, having last appeared as Zaire.

Portugal arrive at the World Cup in excellent shape following a strong run of preparation matches. They recorded back-to-back 2-1 victories over Chile and Nigeria, showing both resilience and attacking sharpness.

Roberto Martínez’s side has been impressive in recent friendlies, remaining unbeaten in their last five games. During this run, they secured a solid 2-0 win over the United States and played out a goalless draw with Mexico earlier in the spring.

Portugal team news

Portugal will be without a key defensive figure for their opening match. Manchester City centre-back Rúben Dias has been ruled out after failing to recover from a knock picked up in a recent warm-up fixture.

In his place, Sporting CP defender Gonçalo Inácio is expected to step in and partner António Silva in central defence.

There is positive news as well, with captain Cristiano Ronaldo fully fit and ready to lead the team. At 41, he is set to start up front and make his sixth appearance at a World Cup, extending his remarkable international career.

Portugal’s attacking options remain strong, with Rafael Leão available despite receiving a red card in an earlier friendly.

The midfield trio of Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and João Neves is expected to play a key role in controlling possession and dictating the pace of the game.

On the wings, Bernardo Silva and Pedro Neto are competing for a starting place, giving Martínez valuable flexibility in his attacking setup.
