Tadej Pogačar added to his greatness when he overcame a crash to win the Milan-Sanremo cycling Monument for the first time in his career in a dramatic finish while the women's race was overshadowed by a horror crash by Italian rider Debora Silvestri.

Slovenia's Pogačar crashed with other riders in a turn some 33 kilometres from the finish of the 298km race, was quickly back on his bike, soon caught up with the peleton and immediately mounted an attack.

Only British Olympic mountain bike champion Thomas Pidcock and Dutch twice winner Mathieu van der Poel were able to follow.

But Van der Poel was dropped at the penultimate climb, Pogačar beat Pidcock in a sprint finish and Belgium's Wout van Aert eventually came third.

"I thought for a second it is all over when I crashed. It is the most important part of the race. There was not too much damage to me and the bike. The legs were still OK," Pogačar said.

Pogačar prevailed in a sprint finish over Pidcock which was not his plan.

"I wanted to go on my own but Tom was really strong. I was the luckier one in the sprint. Tom is a really quick guy. I was a bit scared qwhen I accelerated. It was very close," Pogačar said.

Tour de France and world champion Pogačar won the race on his sixth attempt and can complete top spots at all five Monuments in three week's time if he wins Paris-Roubaix.

He has already won the Tour of Flanders, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Giro de Lombardia.

The women's race won by twice world champion Lotte Kopecky of Belgium was overshadowed by Silvestri's crash.

She lost control on a descent from the Cipressa when she tried to evade other fallen riders, tumbled over a barrier and hit the tarmac several metres below.

Her team Laboral Kutxa said on X she was "in a stable condition" and would "remain in hospital for the next few hours under medical supervision and will undergo further tests to assess the extent of her injuries."
