Michael Thorbjornsen's attempt at winning his Players Championship debut all but ended in stunning fashion on Sunday afternoon.

The 24-year-old PGA Tour pro played his way into the final round's final pairing and was off to a strong start at one under through three holes playing alongside leader Ludvig Aberg. But then things unraveled quickly on the par-4 fourth.

Thorbjornsen missed the fairway left and had such a bad lie, he opted to lay up from only 104 yards in order to avoid making a big number. Instead, that's what he wound up making.

Thorbjornsen's third shot found the water and then after finally reaching the green, he blew his first putt by and three-putted for a quadruple-bogey 8 to fall from a share of second to out of the top 10 at TPC Sawgrass. Here's a look at how it went down:

Aberg bogeyed the hole and still picked up three shots on his playing partner, who tumbled six shots off the lead early in his final round. A bogey on the next hole made the deficit even larger.

Thorbjornsen, who finished first in the 2024 PGA Tour University standings to earn his tour card, is still searching for his maiden victory. He had seven top fives in 51 career starts entering this week, including a pair of runner-ups.
