The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the Indiana Pacers on Friday night needing a win in the worst way. The Sixers are in the middle of a tight race in the Eastern Conference for both the play-in and the top 6 in the playoffs and needed to take care of business against the lowly Pacers.
There were some tough moments as the Pacers had a big advantage in 3-pointers in this one, but the Sixers were able to eventually outlast Indiana and win it 105-94. The win snapped a 3-game losing streak as the Sixers look to build momentum going into the postseason, whether it's the play-in or straight to the playoffs.
Tyrese Maxey had 32 points, seven rebounds, and five assists for Philadelphia, Kelly Oubre Jr. had 15 points, seven rebounds, and four steals, Paul George had 21 points and five rebounds, and VJ Edgecombe had 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Andre Drummond hopped off the bench and had 10 points and 16 rebounds.
Here are the player grades following the win:
The star guard was aggressive with his offense early and often in this one. He attacked the paint by using his blazing quickness to be able to get to the basket and finish over Indiana’s taller defenders. He struggled with his 3-point shot in the early going, but Maxey was able to get the scoreboard moving and he played with a ton of energy to allow the Sixers to get into a groove. It wasn’t a hugely efficient night for him nor was it a great defensive night, but Maxey’s aggressiveness gave the Sixers a big boost and he fought through a lot of bumps and bruises in this one. He put his body on the line for Philadelphia and deserves credit for that.
The Pacers didn’t know what to do with Edgecombe. He just bothered everybody on Indiana with his speed, athleticism, IQ, and shot-making as he made an impact in a number of ways for Philadelphia. He was active defensively, moved his feet well, and exploded to the basket when he had a lane. He was solid defensively and was terrific in terms of his rebounding and playmaking. It was a professional performance from a player so young.
After a miserable night in Houston on Thursday, George was able to get going early in this one. He knocked down two 3s in the early going, was helpful on the glass, and made some defensive plays against this young Pacers team. He had a flurry in the third quarter to keep the Pacers at bay and right the ship a bit for Philadelphia.
The 11-year veteran was a pest on the defensive end as he got after it on the perimeter. The Pacers don’t have many reliable ball-handlers and Oubre used his length and IQ to poke the ball away and get Philadelphia out and running. He then used his size and soft touch to get some shots to fall on the offensive end. He set the tone for Philadelphia all night long and was able to give the Sixers a little bit of everything in this one. He continues to prove his worth to this roster as a versatile player.
It was a tough night for Bona. The Pacers are a sizeable team with Micah Potter and Jay Huff down low and they bothered him a bit. While Bona is athletic and plays with a ton of energy, one can’t teach size. The second-year big man was unable to make much of an impact.
The veteran big man made a serious impact in his initial stint. He was terrific on the glass, played bully ball in the paint, and was a big help on the defensive end. His size made a real difference for Philadelphia after a slow start on both ends. His work on the glass and his ability to make an impact was felt in this one. The Sixers needed everything he gave to them.
The energetic guard hopped off the bench and gave the Sixers some help on the offensive end. He had a nice drive to the basket for a bucket and then got to the line as well. His first stint included him committing a foul on a 3-point shooter, but it was a good start for him. After the quick bucket, he cooled off a bit, but he was able to do a number of different things to contribute.
The initial stint for Barlow didn’t produce much in terms of stats, but he was impactful. He was a menace on the defensive end as he blew up some of Indiana’s actions and he was in the right spots. He had a dunk in the third to help Philadelphia keep these pesky Pacers at bay and continued to play hard. Therefore, a usual Barlow night.
The Sixers went to Edwards early after such a big fourth quarter in Houston on Thursday and he made an impact in this one. He was terrific on the defensive end in this one.
