The Pittsburgh Pirates rallied to tie the game in the ninth inning but were walked-off 9-6 in 10 innings to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Tuesday night.
Scoring Plays
Bottom 3rd, 2-0 STL: With two outs, JJ Wetherholt hit a two-run home run to left-center off Mitch Keller. It was Wetherholt’s ninth home run of the season and third against the Pirates (24-24).
Bottom 4th, 3-0 STL: The Cardinals (28-19) tacked on another when Keller got Nolan Gorman to bounce into a double play with runners on the corners and one out.
Top 5th, 4-3 PIT: The Pirates finally got to Matthew Liberatore with four runs in the fifth. Brandon Lowe scored from third on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, Bryan Reynolds tied the game with a two-run double off the wall in left-center. Two batters later, Oneil Cruz delivered an RBI single, which knocked Liberatore out of the game.
Bottom 6th, 5-4 STL: After Keller was lifted with one on and two outs, Nolan Gorman hit a go-ahead two-run home run off left-handed reliever Evan Sisk.
Bottom 8th, 6-4 STL: Alec Burleson added insurance with a 404-foot solo shot to right-center off Brandan Bidois.
Top 9th, 6-6: Marcell Ozuna bounced into a double play with the bases loaded and no outs to bring home Nick Gonzales from third. After a walk to Oneil Cruz, pinch-hitter Spencer Horwitz singled home the tying run off Riley O’Brien, who blew the save.
Bottom 10th, 9-6 STL: Iván Herrera hit a walk-off three-run home run off Mason Montgomery (1-1) on an elevated 0-2 breaking ball.
Key Moment
Mitch Keller was only at 83 pitches when manager Don Kelly opted for the left-on-left matchup between Evan Sisk and Nolan Gorman in the sixth.
George Soriano (2-0) kept the Pirates off the board in the 10th inning by striking out pinch-hitter Jake Mangum before retiring both Endy Rodríguez and Nick Gonzales.
Player of the Game
Alec Burleson finished 2 for 3 with a home run, an RBI and three runs scored.
Stat to Know
The Pirates had gone 22 straight innings (25 excluding extra innings) without scoring a run until putting up a four-spot in the fifth. They scored a run in the sixth inning and another in the 10th against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday before they were shut out in back-to-back games in the next two games of the series.
