PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, was the scene of a medical emergency after a fan fell 21 feet from the Clemente Wall in right field onto the warning track during play on Wednesday night, April 30.
The incident occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning, either during or shortly after five-time Pirates All-Star and 17-year MLB veteran Andrew McCutchen cracked a two-run double that gave his team a one-run lead.
Cubs defenders signaled to team doctors from both dugouts after witnessing what occurred. Medical staff eventually transported the unidentified male to Allegheny General Hospital. His current status remains unknown.
McCutchen took to social media following the contest to share his grief on the matter and call for prayers for the injured fan.
"Truly hate what happened tonight," McCutchen posted to his X account. "Can't help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I pray tonight for him. Let us think about his loved ones and hug our families a little tighter tonight. I hope he pulls thru. May God Bless you all. Good night ."
McCutchen and some of his teammates, as well as members of the Cubs, prayed visibly on the field following the incident, according to a report from the Associated Press.
"Players from both teams could be seen praying, and McCutchen held a cross that hung from his neck while the fan was taken off the field," the AP wrote, per ESPN. "The game was paused for several minutes while the man was tended to but there was no official stoppage in play."
Pittsburgh went on to defeat Chicago by a score of 4-3.
