Mar. 7—WRIGHT TWP. — The first quarter signaled a possible blowout.

The final score indicated that victory might have been somewhat comfortable.

The truth is Crestwood had to battle Cocalico to the end for a 51-38 victory Saturday afternoon in a PIAA Class 5A girls basketball first-round game.

"I think we were a little too fast on offense. Rushing things, rushing shots," Crestwood coach Mary Mushock-Namey said. "Our focus wasn't there when we go that fast. When you're rushing down the court like that and just throwing up shots and not doing little things, unfortunately the game is going to be a little closer than you want it to be."

District 2 champion Crestwood (24-3) will play District 1 fourth seed Marple Newtown (18-8) in the second round Wednesday at a time and site to be determined.

The Comets never trailed and led 16-4 after one quarter as Jackie Gallagher scored 10 of her game-high 22 points.

Crestwood, though, couldn't keep up the same scoring pace the rest of the way. Turnovers were an issue as the Comets had 22 of them, some forced by Cocalico's defense but others on errant passes.

"Not our best effort," Mushock-Namey said. "We didn't handle the pressure very well. On the opposite side, we wanted to pressure them and what we wanted to do to them, they did to us."

Still, the Comets went into halftime ahead 25-13 partially due to Cocalico's poor shooting. The Eagles shot 1-of-12 in the first quarter and 4-of-24 for the half.

Needing an offensive jolt, Corrine Fair provided it for Cocalico. Fair began knocking down 3-pointers as Crestwood's lead dwindled to seven just two minutes into the third quarter. The Comets closed the third strongly, and Gallagher converted a steal into a layup for a 38-25 advantage entering the fourth.

Cocalico wouldn't surrender and, in particular, Fair showed no quit. She nailed a few more 3-pointers, her second cutting Crestwood's lead to 40-34 with five minutes left.

"It was self-inflicted," Gallagher said. "We were going a little bit too fast and weren't talking care of the ball, weren't talking on defense, but we fixed that."

Gallagher followed with her final basket of the game and Cameron Vieney then flipped the momentum for good. Vieney took a charge on the defensive end and followed up with a scoop layup to push the Comets' lead back to double digits. Cocalico never moved closer than nine the rest of the way.

"You always expect teams playing in the state tournament to come back hard," Gallagher said. "You can't ever give up no matter how big your lead is. So that was our big thing. Keep our foot on the gas."

Keira Dougherty added 17 points for Crestwood and her defense on Fair down the stretch shut off her 3-point barrage.
