It's entirely possible star guard Jalen Green is still on the Phoenix Suns' roster to start next season.
However, the Suns should not rule out trading him this offseason. The reality is Green just simply is not an ideal fit with the Suns because franchise cornerstone Devin Booker is at his best when he's playing shooting guard with a true playmaker alongside him.
So, who could the Suns trade Green for exactly? SBNation linked Phoenix to an offseason trade for Dallas Mavericks guard and nine-time All-Star Kyrie Irving. The proposed trade sees Green and Irving swap teams with no draft capital involved for either party.
"Kyrie has a similar skill set to Jalen Green in that he can put downhill pressure on the rim, but that’s where the similarities end," SBNation's Tom Mildenberger wrote. "Kyrie is one of the best finishing guards ever. He’s great with the ball in his hands, but he’s also been successful in the number two role next to LeBron and Luka."
Mildenberger continued, "He’s older and coming off an injury, but if he makes a healthy return, he’d give the Suns what they really need to free up Devin Booker: a second offensive threat the defense takes seriously."
Irving has not appeared in an NBA game since the 2024-2025 season, but when he was last on the floor for the Dallas Mavericks, he looked like his usual self. The 34-year-old averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists on 47.3% shooting in 50 games.
The reason the Mavericks would agree to this hypothetical deal is because Green is roughly 10 years younger than Irving, which is the same reason the Suns would need to be cautious about accepting this trade.
Irving strengthens the odds of Phoenix making a postseason run, but only for a short period of time. If the Suns are in the market for a true point guard, ideally they find a star younger than Irving.
It's obvious the Suns desire contention, and a Green for Irving swap would help them get closer to that goal.
