As stated many times before, the Philadelphia Phillies, at 56-47 and 4.5 games out in the National League East as of July 24, need to be all in at this year's trade deadline.
That could result in the Phillies making a blockbuster trade, too, though it remains uncertain what Philadelphia really wants to do. If the Phillies think they have a real opportunity to win a World Series, they can go in a few different directions.
If they want to try to be cheap and make smaller moves, there could also be benefits if they work out.
However, I believe this organization needs to do much more than just make small moves, which is why the most recent blockbuster trade idea would make a ton of sense.
Bleacher Report recently suggested that Philadelphia should go after Josh Hader of the Houston Astros, and I really don't think there would be many better options out there for this organization.
“While they definitely don't need a closer, a dominant left-handed reliever would be fantastic. José Alvarado has been struggling all season long and maybe won't even make the postseason roster, at which point it's Tim Mayza or bust in a hypothetical NLCS against the Dodgers' left-handed heavy lineup. Josh Hader has a full no-trade clause and may well reject a proposal in which he would be, at best, splitting save situations with Jhoan Duran.
“But if he's open to it, I'd certainly feel better about picking the Phillies to the World Series if they had Hader to deal with the likes of Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Max Muncy,” Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report wrote.
Hader has been absolutely lights-out throughout the year, albeit he's dealt with some injuries and has only thrown 18.1 innings.
However, in that same span, he's only allowed three earned runs and has struck out 29 hitters. This is one of the most dominant relievers we've ever seen, and adding him to the back end of this Phillies bullpen would be absolutely terrifying if things go as planned.
Hader is that good and would be worth whatever he cost.
