Many have started to question what Tarik Skubal's market will look like in just about a month.
With Major League Baseball’s trade deadline at the beginning of August, there's certainly a feeling that multiple contending teams are going to be very interested in his services. Skubal, undoubtedly one of the best starters in Major League Baseball, if not the best, has a real opportunity to end up on a very good team.
There's also a possibility that the Detroit Tigers will start playing a bit better and turn things around after what they've done in recent weeks. However, with Skubal hitting the free-agent market at the end of the campaign, many still believe that he's going to be traded in a few weeks.
If that proves to be the case, many teams will be interested in his services, including the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Phillies have continued to prove in recent years that they'll do whatever it takes to ensure they have a chance to win, which makes going after a guy like Skubal very possible. It remains uncertain whether the Phillies will do so, but according to the latest report from John Heyman, there's a possibility.
“I think anybody who is contender with money to spend is going to be in on Tarik Skubal,” Heyman said. “He was here last week with the Tigers and threw a great game against the Yankees… he knows there’s a good chance he will traded, even if they are back in the race.”
“I’m going to throw in the Phillies there,” Heyman said. “We’ve heard their name a little bit, but obviously they have been looking for a number of different things, but we know that they have talked more about starting pitching… to beat the Dodgers, you’ve got to have left-handers.”
With the Phillies searching for starting pitching at this year's deadline, and as Heyman touched on, looking to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, there's absolutely no reason to not at least show interest in Skubal.
That doesn't mean the Phillies are going to land him, as they'd have to use their farm system to do so, but it's positive to hear that they at least have some level of interest at the moment. That should give us a good indication that Skubal could end up in Philadelphia.
