Phillies make Andrew Painter decision that most fans will never agree with originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
It almost feels like the Philadelphia Phillies have to do something with right-hander Andrew Painter. The hope is for Painter to come up to Major League Baseball and be an absolute star on the bump, but the right-hander has dealt with some unfortunate injuries over the past few years, and it's seemingly not anything that the Phillies were hoping for.
With a 6.43 ERA and strikeout numbers not being as high as anybody was hoping for, with 50 in 63.0 innings, Painter, so far, has been the definition of a bust. I don't want to put that label on him just yet, as he's only 23 years old, but if things don't change in the near future, that's exactly how everybody is going to view him.
It's a bit surprising that Philadelphia isn't sending him down, but according to the latest reports, there doesn't even seem to be a plan that the Phillies are considering.
“The Phillies will not send Painter to the minors. Alan Rangel exists, I know, but the Phillies would prefer not to rely on him in the rotation unless there is an injury. The ideal scenario is Painter figuring it out, obviously. Perhaps they skip his turn in the rotation if this spiral continues, but for now, they are content to help him work through it in the majors,” Charlotte Varnes wrote.
In Major League Baseball, especially for a contending team like the Phillies, these things can change fast.
If the front office believes it has to make a move to improve its chances of winning, that's what should happen. I understand why they don't want to send Painter down because it could kill the young man's confidence, but the Phillies have a World Series to chase here, and he's definitely not helping with that.
