Penge, 28, won three times on the DP World Tour and nearly made the European Ryder Cup team last season with his hot play. As a rookie on the PGA Tour, he’s made seven cuts in 12 starts this season, with a T-4 at the Valspar Championship in March, and ranked 83rd in the FedEx Cup. He missed the cut last week at the PGA Championship.

“This week didn’t go the way I wanted it to but that’s golf,” he wrote on Instagram. “Moving forward, I have decided that I am going to take some time off to get my health back to where it needs to be. Thank you for your support as always. I’ll be back soon.”

Penge previously had posted on X that he had been dealing with a sinus infection and vertigo symptoms and underwent an MRI on his brain and neck recently.

“Thankfully the images were great and so a few of the doubts I have had have gone away, which is a big relief,” he wrote. “I’m battling to get fully fit again and hopefully that’s not too far away.”

Penge and his wife, Sophie, welcomed their second child, a son named Romeo, on Feb. 24. Romeo was born with underdeveloped lungs and spent 21 days in a Florida hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) before going home. The couple also has an older son, Enzo, born in 2024. Penge is also adjusting to living in a new country for the first time. At the Players, he said he missed visiting familiar cities such as London and Rome, but was enjoying playing the great golf courses in the U.S., including Cypress Point.

“I feel like this is where I belong, where I was always destined to be,” he said in March about playing on the PGA Tour. “I haven’t fulfilled my potential but I’m trying my best to fulfill that.”

Penge is ranked No. 43 in the Official World Golf Ranking after ending last season at a career-best of 29th.

Pros taking mental health breaks has become a more accepted practice since the death of Grayson Murray. Veteran pro Brendon Todd took an extended break last season and has mounted a comeback this year thanks to a medical exemption.
