PETOSKEY — Bryan Shaw did his best to stay out of the limelight throughout his coaching career in Petoskey.

It was never about him in his eyes.

But the athletes and teams he coached couldn’t help but end up in the spotlight and bring him along.

Whether it was youth players that eventually turned into stars or teams that went on to capture conference or postseason hardware, Shaw had a part in building nearly three decades of boys and girls basketball in Petoskey.

His body of work and the humbleness he brought to the profession made him an obvious recent choice as the 44th recipient of the Glenn H. Casey Award, presented annually by the Petoskey Parks and Rec. Department.

“It was very surprising and cool,” Shaw said. “Honestly, now that I’m retired, you kind of fly under the radar. When I got the letter I was shocked.”

It’s not surprising to hear Shaw was surprised or shocked. Similar to past recipients who have earned the honor – presented to a volunteer who exhibits an outstanding commitment to Petoskey recreation programs – Shaw never sought out attention.

He joins a notable group of volunteers and coaching peers like Dennis and Karen Starkey, Roy Harvey, Jim Kan, Zach Jonker and more who have received the honor.

His coaching days began early in his 30-year teaching career in Petoskey, when he coached intramural eighth grade boys basketball with Jim Rummer.

From there, he moved on to coaching freshmen boys with assistant Steve Behan, then later took over the varsity Petoskey girls program for nine years.

His girls teams won three Big North Conference titles and a pair of districts, along with 93 games over those nine seasons with assistants and close friends Gina Wittenberg and Sean Pollion.

The youth level is where he spent most of his time, developing players before they reached Starkey’s standout teams.

Shaw loved playing a part in teaching the game at its fundamental level.

“Teaching the basic skills and then seeing most kids like it,” Shaw said on what he always enjoyed. “Also, to see the older kids working with the young kids. I always enjoyed that. We’d set up stations and demonstrate and the varsity would come help. I liked that when I was growing up and I think it’s a big thing.”

Shaw retired from teaching and coaching in 2024, though has continued to frequent the PHS gym with Brooke Carlson now leading the Petoskey girls.

They’ve kept up a string of titles, either Big North or postseason, that Shaw helped build.

“That has been a blast to watch,” Shaw said. “I think Brooke has done a great job. They’ve had great attitudes and played hard. For them to get over that (regional) hump was huge. It was fun to watch.”

Shaw received the Glenn H. Casey outside the Petoskey City Hall building from Parks and Recreation Director Kendall Klingelsmith and Parks and Recreation Commission Chairperson Kenneth Turk, among others.

He was joined by his wife, Kathe, along with daughters Kendra, Olivia and Maddie in receiving the honor.
