Penn State football has landed a potential star quarterback a year early.

The Nittany Lions received a verbal commitment on Thursday, July 2, from one of the top high school QBs in the nation − perhaps the most important recruiting victory for Matt Campbell since he took over as head coach seven months ago.

Four-star prospect James Armstrong, a junior-to-be from Hopewell High near Pittsburgh, gave Penn State its third pledge of its 2028 recruiting class. Armstrong (6-foot-3, 220 pounds) is ranked the nation's No. 9 quarterback in his class by Rivals.com, and is a Top 20 QB, for now, according to 247Sports and ESPN.

He joins Buffalo kicker Carter Petri and highly-regarded Erie cornerback Deonte Flemings, Jr. in PSU's very early group of junior commitments.

Armstrong picked Penn State over a litany of reported scholarship offers including Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Duke, Florida State, Georgia, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, UCLA, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

This comes after he was one of Pennsylvania's most prolific quarterbacks last fall, passing for more than 2,200 yards, running for nearly 800 and combining for 37 touchdowns, according to 247Sports. The football, basketball and baseball star recently became the first sophomore ever to be named the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Athlete of the Year.

He will join a Penn State quarterback room that figures to feature high senior Will Wood (verbal commitment), true freshmen Peyton Falzone and Kase Evans and redshirt freshman Alex Manske.
