Penguins Reportedly Like Bowen Byram 'Great Deal' In Potential Trade originally appeared on SportsNet Pittsburgh. Add SportsNet Pittsburgh as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Pittsburgh Penguins could look to add a star young defenseman in a trade.
Pittsburgh is looking to be aggressive this offseason to add talent to its roster as the Penguins are looking to build off this year’s success. So, ahead of the NHL Draft beginning on Friday, Penguins insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic believes Pittsburgh could look to trade for Bowen Byram from the Buffalo Sabres.
“I think Buffalo defenseman Bowen Byram is a name to keep in mind. He’s 25, gifted and perhaps only now coming into his own. He will require big-time money and only has one year remaining on his deal,” Yohe wrote in an article published on Monday. “It would cost a lot, in terms of trade pieces and in future money. But this is a talented player in his mid-20s. These are the kinds of players Dubas is targeting and I’ve heard this is a player who the Penguins like a great deal.”
Byram is entering the final year of his two-year, $12.5 million deal and will be an RFA at the end of it. The 25-year-old is a star young offensive defenseman who would bolster Pittsburgh’s blue line.
Byram recorded 11 goals and 31 assists for 42 points in 82 games last season. He won a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2022.
However, given that he is young, it would cost a ton to acquire him, but it could be a move worth paying for the Penguins to build around Byram for years.
