The New England Patriots hosted University of Cincinnati wide receiver Cyrus Allen on Wednesday, according to SI.com's Arye Pulli.

Allen has proven himself as a legitimate red zone threat by hauling in 51 receptions for 674 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. If the aim is to get more explosive at wide receiver, it would make sense for the Patriots to show interest in Allen, who averaged 13.2 yards per catch. His touchdown catches last season tied the single-season school record and led the Big 12 Conference.

The Patriots released their top receiving option, Stefon Diggs, at the start of the new league year. They signed veteran Romeo Doubs in free agency, but they are clearly looking for another explosive receiving option to complement the former Green Bay Packer.

Allen is projected to be a mid-to-late round prospect.

So, at the very least, he could be a player that the Patriots consider taking a late flier on in the draft. The team has struggled to develop home-grown receiving options into reliable contributors. Granted, they started to turn a corner with last year's rookie wideout, Kyle Williams.

Perhaps they could do so again with a legitimate vertical threat receiver like Allen.
