For the first time in the month of July, and the first time since June 26, the San Diego Padres got a win.
The most recent victory prior to Sunday was on June 26 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Padres won the series finale on Sunday Night baseball on July 5 by a score of 5-2.
The fireworks came one day late for San Diego, and it started early. In the first inning, manager Craig Stammen was ejected from the game after arguing a check swing call on Fernando Tatis Jr.
Ryan Goins was also tossed, and here's the sequence.
After that, nothing much happened, but the Padres ended the scoreless tie with a Jackson Merrill RBI single in the fourth.
The Padres then added four runs in the seventh, with Tatis driving in a run and Manny Machado hitting a three-run home run to center field to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Dodgers lone runs came in the bottom of the seventh as Alex Freeland had an RBI single and Shohei Ohtani drove in a run with a single.
JP Sears delivered arguably his best outing as a Padre. He went five innings, allowing just one hit and walking two with zero runs and five strikeouts.
Sears allowed six earned runs last time out against the Chicago Cubs, so this was a more positive outing for the left-hander.
Yuki Matsui threw 0.2 scoreless innings, and Bradgley Rodriguez threw 0.2 innings, but allowed one run.
Adrian Morejon threw 1.2 innings and allowed the second run, striking out three and giving up three hits.
Finally, closer Mason Miller closed the door with a scoreless ninth. The National League All-Star nominee recorded his 22nd save of the season, and his ERA went back down below 1.00 at 0.98 as he continues to look like the best player in San Diego by far.
For LA, Emmett Sheehan threw 4.1 innings, allowing just one run in a solid outing. However, Kyle Hurt went just one inning, giving up four runs on three hits in a rough outing.
The Padres finally snap the losing streak, and they now head to Petco Park to face the Arizona Diamondbacks beginning on Monday before hosting the Toronto Blue Jays for the weekend.
Brandon Pfaadt (1-1, 5.40 ERA) is slated for Arizona with Walker Buehler (5-4, 4.61 ERA) scheduled to take the mound for San Diego.
