The Texas Rangers have signed free agent pitcher Chris Paddack and purchased the contract of infielder/outfielder Cam Cauley from AAA Round Rock, the team announced today. To make room for the pair on the active roster and the 40 man roster, the Rangers have designated outfielder Jarred Kelenic and pitcher Joe Ross for assignment. This leaves the 40 man roster at 39.

We talked earlier today about both the Cauley promotion and the Paddack signing when they were each separately reported by the beats on what has turned out to be kind of a busy day.

With Cauley, the odd man out appeared to be Jarred Kelenic, who was in fact designated for assignment. Kelenic, who was 1 for 8 with a pair of walks in 10 plate appearances over 7 games for the Rangers, appears to have been victimized by the i.l. stint of Wyatt Langford. Langford was replaced on the active roster by Evan Carter, who was activated from the injured list and resumed his regular role as the team’s center fielder. Had Langford not been injured, he would have moved to left field, and Alejandro Osuna would likely have returned to Round Rock to get everyday at bats, while Kelenic stayed on the bench and played sparingly.

Langford’s injury, however, meant that Osuna would continue to get the majority of the playing time in left field, and made the need for a versatile righthanded bat to come off the bench or platoon with Osuna and/or Carter a more pressing. It is possible that even without the Langford injury, Kelenic would have been replaced by Cauley, with Osuna also going down for Carter, but the one righthanded hitting regular outfielder going down made the need for a righthanded bat more urgent.

As for Paddack, I initially figured Winston Santos would go down tomorrow and the Paddack signing would be announced then, giving them a length guy for today’s game in Cleveland. However, Joe Ross got the axe instead. Ross put up a 4.50 ERA in eight innings, with a 5.85 ERA. That was an improvement over the 19.64 ERA and 8.83 FIP he put up in 3.2 innings for Arizona, for what it is worth.
