The Oregon Ducks couldn't pull off the comeback win in extra innings against Northwestern on Sunday, but the bigger loss might be a potential injury that sidelines shortstop Maddox Molony.

The junior shortstop was hit by a pitch on his left hand or forearm in the second inning, which immediately caused some pain and discomfort. Molony returned to the field the following inning with a significant wrap around his left hand. He managed to stay in the game for a few more innings before being lifted in the sixth inning.

Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski confirmed after the game that Molony was pulled because of his injury, but declined to comment on the nature of the wound.

"Anytime a guy comes out of the game, you're always concerned about it," Wasikowski said. "We'll see whatever comes forth with the doctors and all that. But anytime a guy comes out of a game, you're always concerned."

If Molony were to miss any time, it would be a significant blow to the Ducks' lineup. While he has started the season slower than he would like, Molony is one of the best hitters in the lineup. He's provided a .250 batting average with four home runs and 16 RBI so far this season and plays tremendous defense up the middle. Molony is the No. 49-ranked prospect by MLB ahead of the upcoming draft and could push his way into the first round with a strong junior season.

Without Molony, the Ducks' infield would see a shuffle. Ryan Cooney, the regular second baseman, shifted to shortstop after Molony was pulled from the game on Sunday. Since Molony has started every game this season at shortstop, Cooney could be the answer to replace him. Freshman Malosi Mata'afa-Alferos entered the game at second base, which could fill Molony's place in the lineup. Left fielder Jax Gimenez also has some middle infield experience if Wasikowski decides to shift his position as well.

The Ducks will hope to have a diagnosis on Molony's injury and know whether or not he will need to miss time soon. Oregon will begin a two-game midweek series at UC San Diego on Tuesday before opening a weekend series at UC Santa Barbara on Friday.
