Nuggets named landing spot for $101 million Lakers four-time NBA champion star originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Denver Nuggets, like the Boston Celtics, could have avoided a complex, drama-filled offseason by avoiding a premature playoff exit.
While Denver never had a 3-1 first-round postseason lead like the Celtics, they had the luxury of competing against an injury-riddled Minnesota Timberwolves for 2.5 games (Ayo Dosunmu, Anthony Edwards, and Donte DiVincenzo all missed time with various ailments).
The Nikola Jokic-led Nuggets couldn’t get the job done, though, as Minnesota defeated Denver in six games. Who will the 2023 NBA champions look to add to their roster in the summer to get back on track in 2026-27? ESPN’s Bobby Marks listed the Los Angeles Lakers' four-time NBA champion star as a potential option.
“The deal I'd offer (LeBron James): One year, $30 million,” Marks wrote Friday. “The contract includes a full no-trade clause. Best fits: Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, and Golden State Warriors.”
“James' impact during the regular season and playoffs still reflects a max player. He was named an All-Star for a record-setting 23rd season and averaged at least 20 points, six rebounds, and seven assists per game for a third straight year. And only Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey scored more fast-break points this season than 41-year-old James.”
James, a looming free agent, hasn’t been linked to the Nuggets much since the end of the Lakers’ 2025-26 season. A return to the Lakers, a reunion with the Cavaliers, a blockbuster signing with the Warriors, or a massive deal with the New York Knicks are far more likely offseason scenarios for the 22-time All-Star.
However, the Nuggets will have an opportunity to extend an offer to James that they deem acceptable and hope for the best possible result. Pairing Nikola Jokic with James would give Denver arguably the most intelligent and meticulous tandem in the league, as both contributors are known for their high basketball IQs and patient offensive approaches.
Time will tell if the Nuggets will work their magic to land James this offseason.
