Anytime a highly touted player enters Notre Dame football program, you want to see them at their best, but it doesn’t always happen that way.
Unfortunately for former Irish defensive lineman Brenan Vernon, it didn’t go as planned. Signed in 2023 out of Ohio, he entered the program as a 4-star prospect with plenty of hype. Over the next two seasons Vernon had trouble getting onto the field, and then in 2025 he injured his MCL which required surgery.
A switch to the offense helped the team build depth, but the injury was just too much for him to overcome. As first reported by Matt Freeman, Vernon has medically retired from the game.
The first official commitment in the Marcus Freeman era didn’t work out the way anyone anticipated, as we wish Vernon the best in his endeavors post-football.
