Notre Dame football recently saw the SEC come out and say that their teams would play more against the Irish, but it looks like a future home-and-home matchup isn’t firmly on the schedule.
Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte said on Wednesday via On3’s Brett McMurphy that the 2028 and 2029 games are “tentatively” on the schedule for the two programs, putting plenty of doubt into if they will be played. Notre Dame is no stranger to teams backing out from playing them, as USC recently did the same, but there is some momentum for them to revive their rivalry.
However, there isn’t much history between the Longhorns and the Irish, as they’ve played each other just twelve times before, with Notre Dame leading the all-time series 9-3. Texas does have the most recent win, a high-scoring affair way back in 2016.
It would be very unfortunate if the two teams didn’t play their currently scheduled games, but as Notre Dame did with USC by adding BYU to replace them, the Irish will still try to add a marquee matchup instead of ducking a top team.

Texas & Notre Dame scheduled to play home/home series in 2028-29, but UT AD Chris Del Conte wouldn’t fully commit the games would be played. “They’re ‘tentatively’ on the schedule right now,” Del Conte said
