No points in St. Pölten

0-3 – RBS women lose to strong side

SKN St. Pölten 3-0 FC Red Bull Salzburg Women (H/T:1-0). Goals: Mattner (28', 47', 67')

At SKN St. Pölten
, the reigning ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga champions, our girls rarely found their rhythm. Instead, we had to acknowledge that the attacking prowess of hat-trick scorer Mattner and her teammates was simply too much today. However, there's not much time to dwell on it – the absolute highlight of the season, the cup final, is ahead on Thursday.

Match summary

Within seconds, the reigning champions underlined their ambitions: Brunold had slipped behind our defence and received a through ball, but her aim wasn't quite right, and the shot lacked precision.

The Wolves upped the ante as the first half progressed, but our team held firm until the 28th minute, after goalkeeper Lara Ritter had made saves against the onrushing Aistleitner and Mattner from long range. Then Brunold hit a through ball, her cross was only partially met by Aldina Hamzic, but Mattner, unmarked, made no mistake – and made it 1-0 (28'). Although we managed some counter-attacks – Tina Krassnig tested the hosts' goalkeeper Schlüter with a shot on the turn – the hosts dictated the play until half-time. Mattner, once again breaking free, hit the post in a one-on-one. We therefore remained a goal down at the break.

We tried to turn things around in the second period but ran into the same old trouble! Although there were periods of calm for our defence, Fassotte's team capitalised on their clear-cut chances. Soon after the restart, Mattner curled the ball from the edge of the penalty area over Ritter and into the net for St. Pölten (47'), then completed her hat trick. This time, from a similar position and a quick chip to make it 3-0 (67').

In the final stages, Vina Crnoja and the returning Sara Grabovac had chances to get a consolation goal, but we seem to have saved the goals for the upcoming Austrian Women's Cup final, which will take place next Thursday in Vienna.

St. Pölten was simply the better team today and deservedly won. Nevertheless, I'm not dissatisfied with our performance. We showed a good, courageous approach to the match, were energetic, and made life as difficult as possible for St. Pölten . Despite that, we couldn't get a result today. We accept that, and we'll move on!
