No. 6 Iowa State gets within 3, fall by 10 at No. 23 BYU

PROVO, Utah — Iowa State junior forward Milan Momcilovic connected on his 100th 3-point basket on the season in the Cyclones’ 79-69 loss at BYU late Saturday. Iowa State dropped to 23-4 overall and 10-4 in the Big 12, while the Cougars improved to 20-7 overall and 8-6 in the conference.

Momcilovic joined the late Dedric Willoughby as the second Cyclone ever to score at least 100 3-point baskets in a season.

Following a Blake Buchanan dunk which put Iowa State up 12-9 at the 14:10 mark, BYU went on a 9-0 run to take a 18-12 lead with 11:32 remaining in the first half. The Cyclones responded with an 13-6 run that capped off with a three-pointer from Joshua Jefferson. The Cougars reclaimed the lead following a 12-0 run.

BYU led 39-30 at intermission.

The Cyclones, down 47-34 at the 16:43 mark in the second half, mustered a 13-4 run to bring the game within six.

Tamin Lipsey, who led Iowa State with 19 points, connected on a 3-point basket which whittled the BYU lead to three with 7:21 remaining. The Cougars responded with a 9-0 run to pad their lead and remained in front for the duration of the game.

For the game, BYU outshot Iowa State 50% (29-58) to 42.6% (23-54). The Cougars also had the rebounding edge (39-28).

Batemon and Jefferson joined Lipsey in double digits, with 14 and 13 points respectively. Jefferson pulled down eight rebounds and dished out seven assists.

AJ Dybantsa had 29 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists which led the Cougars . Kennard Davis Jr. followed with 17 points.

The Cyclones will take on Utah (10-17, 2-12 Big 12) on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
