Many people seemed to think that it would be next-to-impossible for an NBA player to best Kobe Bryant's superlative 81-point game during the 2005-06 season. But that's exactly what the Miami Heat's Bam Adebayo did on Tuesday when he rocked the league by putting up 83 points against the Washington Wizards.

The reaction to that performance has been polarizing. While Bryant scored 81 points the hard way — by getting hot and hitting many contested and semi-contested jumpers, Adebayo attempted 43 free throws and made 36 of them. Some feel that Adebayo's feat is therefore a bit cheap compared to what Bryant did that Sunday night in January 2006.

Former Los Angeles Lakers guard Nick Young, who played alongside Bryant for a few seasons, went on the "Gil's Arena" podcast and expressed his disgust about Adebayo's eruption.

“[Expletive] Bam man and the Wizards. [Expletive] all that [expletive]. All that records supposed to be broken? Hell no. Did you see that? The Wizards. See, I be talking about the Wizards. Y’all always support the Wizards. [Expletive] G League team. French [expletive] getting dumped on the whole time and [expletive]. Playing no defense.

He nice, but he’s not 83 nice. Like, come on, man. This is Kobe. Kobe probably rolling over in his grave right now like, you… [expletive] that. You see how he was going for that 74? That was nasty. Get out the game, you’re winning by 30. If I had 81, I would have stopped. I’m not trying to get fouled with one minute left.”

There wasn't a lot of defense played by the Wizards in that 150-129 win by Miami. Miami led by a wide margin by the second quarter, and therefore, there is a feeling that Adebayo was merely "gunning" for his feat.

When Bryant scored 81 points, the Lakers trailed the Toronto Raptors 63-49 at halftime, and the outcome of the game was in doubt until the latter part of the fourth quarter. By then, Bryant was clearly in the zone of a lifetime, and he was allowed to stay in the game until he had rung up 81 points. Los Angeles clearly needed most of those 81 points to ensure victory.

On that night, Bryant attempted 20 free throws and made 18 of them while going 28-of-46 from the field and 7-of-13 from 3-point range. Adebayo, by contrast, was 20-of-43 overall and 7-of-22 from downtown on Tuesday.
